Temporary Relief Housing at MRU

The statistics are sobering

The ACWS (Alberta Council of Women's Shelters) indicates that in 2019, shelters in Alberta received 60,170 crisis calls.

10,128 women, children and seniors were sheltered in Alberta in 2018/19.

7,474 people were served through outreach programs.

23,246 people in dire need of help were turned away due to a lack of capacity.

When we imagine the university experience, we envision students learning and going through self-discovery, professors bringing passion to their subject matter, and a troop of expert staff ensuring that the whole experience runs smoothly.  We also expect some stress, some fun, and the opportunity to develop life-long connections. What we don't picture is students experiencing abuse while also trying to manage their studies, and perhaps needing an alternative space to live in. We don't envision employees feeling like their workplace is their only safe place.

Domestic violence impacts all communities, including Mount Royal. Each year, members of our campus community leave desperate home situations and come to Mount Royal Residence Services seeking urgent assistance. There is a need to provide urgent housing for people fleeing a dangerous situation while linking them with emotional support and resources for ongoing support.

With support through needed donations, we will create a Safe House fund that will be used to cover the costs associated with temporary on-campus housing needs for MRU students or employees who need urgent support. The intent is to provide free, temporary, secure campus-based housing for MRU students or employees who are in need of immediate shelter due to an abusive situation.

The program will include a collaborative, coordinated response through Residence Services and Counselling Services, including referral to other relevant supports both on and off campus. By doing so, community members needing this support will be linked with confidential emotional supports and academic supports as needed, providing and will provide referrals to other resources to support security, financial, and sustainable housing needs. The Temporary Relief Housing program will provide equatable treatment without discrimination on the basis of race, ethnic origin, family status, citizenship, colour, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, place of origin, relationship status, ancestry, sex, creed, or age.

This fund is being initiated by Janet Miller, a psychologist who has devoted her career to counselling students at Mount Royal.  Janet grew up in a home with domestic violence and her mother, Georgia, later volunteered to support women escaping violence to access safe shelters. On March 10, 2021, Janet will have outlived her mother who died at 49, and to honour her legacy Janet invites you to contribute to this fund. Sharing this posting through your network is welcomed.
