Andrew Nguyen Memorial Fund

Andrew Nguyen was an MRU Nursing graduate and current student in the Advanced Studies in Critical Care Nursing (ACCN) program. His passion for his work and his profession led him to the front lines of Alberta's Covid-19 response, and to disaster relief efforts in Haiti and the Bahamas. He aspired to lead others, whether abroad on the disaster relief stage or here in Canada, and to strengthen our health care systems for all. “No matter where I am, I’ll simply do my best to help others,” he said.

Mount Royal University's deepest condolences go out to Andrew’s family and friends, to his peers in the Faculty of Health, Community and Education, and to the countless individuals across the University whose lives Andrew touched.

As the former President of the Students’ Association of Mount Royal University (SAMRU), a Centennial Gold Medal Recipient, and a graduate of the Bachelor of Nursing program, Andrew embodied the intelligence, care, compassion, and commitment to citizenship that the very best of all MRU graduates possess.  Andrew’s leadership and advocacy for students, along with his aspirations to strengthen health systems and supports in the country, provided inspiration to those who knew him.  His loss will be felt deeply and he will be sorely missed.

In an email to MRU from Andrew’s sister, Leanne wrote “Andrew was an incredible individual with an eager mind who was focused to create change in the lives of the people he met, his presence and actions have not gone unnoticed”.

Funds raised in memory of Andrew Nguyen will be used to support students through the scholarships and bursaries program at Mount Royal University.

If you wish, you can leave a message of condolence for the family in the description section, or send an eCard.

The Peter Lougheed Centre (PLC) Intensive Care Unit was challenged with each wave of the COVID-19 pandemic caring for an overwhelming number of critically ill patients. At the beginning of the first wave, contingency plans included hiring a number of RNs to support the unit as “helper” staff. As a newly graduated nurse of Mount Royal University Andrew joined us as a helper nurse, and has worked through the entire pandemic with the PLC ICU team. We saw Andrew grow tremendously in his practice, rising to the challenge every single shift. As a collective unit, we are saddened to learn of his passing. Andrew was a bright star on the unit. It was a privilege to work with Andrew. His smile and positive energy will be missed every single day, and he will continue to be remembered as an irreplaceable PLC ICU colleague.
