Arts Faculty Field School Fund

Your support inspires students by providing valuable hands-on experiences!

Field schools are an engaging way for students to learn outside traditional classrooms. By exploring environments that are new to them, they gain valuable perspectives and knowledge. Fields schools are consistently seen as memorable experiences that solidify a love of learning.

Due to financial barriers, many students are unable to afford the cost of these trips on top of their tuition. Your support can help students participate in these life changing experiences.

Examples of field work from the Arts Faculty:
The Treaty 7 field school focuses on the history of the Indigenous people, of what is now southern Alberta. Students receive credit in History courses while learning about Plains peoples prior to European contact; and the impact of Treaty 7 on First Nations people. Students visit important sites, with portions of the field study led by members of Indigenous communities.

The Sri Lanka field school offers students credit in Anthropology and Sociology courses while immersing them in Sri Lankan culture. They become participant observers of different cultural practices, and visit active archaeological digs. Students also learn comparative demography and in the process develop an appreciation of studying the past, the present and modern social conditions in a developing island nation.

“Overall, the experience of learning in the field as opposed to in the classroom is amazing. Especially in a field which has such a strong reliance on field work, the opportunity to learn in the field as part of an undergraduate program is truly unique, and an experience I won’t soon forget. As cliché as it is, this trip undoubtedly changed my life, and for the first time in a long time I am immensely excited about my academic future.”

Fields schools are consistently seen as memorable experiences that solidify a love of learning. The goal at MRU is to provide a world-class undergraduate education, including opportunities like these. Your support will open doors for many more students.
