Mount Royal instructor’s family legacy supports students' futures.
One of the best features of Mount Royal University is its supportive community which exists because of the engagement of fantastic faculty, staff, students and the generosity of donors.
One such donor, a longstanding faculty member, is Tim Taylor, a sessional instructor with the Faculty of Science and Technology in the earth and environmental sciences Department. Taylor has taught over 100 courses during his 15 years at MRU and witnessed the positive academic impact he has had on the next generation of students.
After the loss of his late wife Caroll, Taylor decided to create a memorial scholarship endowment in her name. “I was looking for something meaningful to attribute to her and it seemed appropriate to give it to a science student … I know that when she went to university that it wasn’t an easy ride for her and money was constantly a problem.”
Since that first award, Taylor has created two more memorial awards—a scholarship and a bursary to benefit students in the Aviation Diploma and Nursing programs. These awards carry the dual purpose of memorializing three special individuals in Taylor’s family: Carroll, his father Tim and his mother Pam, all while supporting the endeavors of deserving students. These awards are living legacies for his loved ones that will exist in perpetuity and will allow students to focus on their educational goals while reducing their financial burden.
One of these students is S.B., who received the Caroll A. Taylor Memorial Scholarship in 2018. The opportunity to focus on their studies allowed them to gain acceptance into a very competitive clinical genetics program after graduating from MRU. They were one of ten people selected for the program and the only candidate from Alberta to attend.
For Anna Eselevich, the 2021 A.G. Taylor Scholarship in Aviation recipient, receiving this support allowed her to have a rewarding university experience where she got to meet motivated pilots, learn great discipline and retain friendships for life. These opportunities would have been harder to achieve without donors like Taylor supporting her goals.
To honor his mother’s career as a nurse and her immigration story to Canada, Taylor thought that he could provide financial support to another immigrant family to help them succeed. The recently established Pam Taylor Bridge to Canadian Nursing Bursary is for nursing students immigrating to Canada who are entering the Bridge to Canadian Nursing Program at MRU.
Taylor believes in the value of these awards and knows the difference they can make in a student’s life. He is proud that his family’s legacy can support MRU students who are pursuing their dreams.
